These settings control how File Buddy creates text files, such as file lists saved as text.
Default plain text encoding
This menu controls the encoding File Buddy uses to create plain text files. File encoding determines how the file stores non-ASCII characters, such as special characters and most characters in languages other than English. The options are:
Unicode (UTF-8)
UTF-8 Unicode characters are the best choice if you expect to transfer text files between Macintosh and Windows computers and are using modern text editing software
Unicode (UTF-16)
High-endian 16-bit Unicode characters. This is the best choice if you expect text files File Buddy creates to have a large number of multiple-byte characters, such as a list of Japanese file names
Western (Mac OS Roman)
Prior to Mac OS X, which uses Unicode, MacRoman was the standard encoding used on Macs for text using the Roman alphabet, such as English, French, Spanish, German, and so on. This is the best choice if you don’t expect to transfer text files between Macintosh and Windows computers, and expect them to contain mainly Roman characters, or if you intend to use older Mac software to view text files created by File Buddy
Western (Windows Latin 1)
An encoding common to the Windows operating system. This is the best choice if you expect to transfer text files between Macintosh and Windows and expect them to contain mostly basic characters, or if you intend to view text files on Windows with old software
Text File Creator
The Text File Creator button allows you to select an application which will be used as the owner of text files File Buddy creates. You may also enter a creator code manually in the text field next to it. Leave the text field blank, or enter '????' in it if you want text files File Buddy creates to open in your default text editing application.
Append .txt extension to plain text files
If this setting is on, File Buddy will append the “.txt” extension to any text file it creates.
